The Last Phone Room
I saw these phone booths in Italy around 2010, near the Vatican, and they immediately caught my attention. Back home in the States, a phone booth was usually just a phone booth—something practical, plain, and easy to walk past.
These were different.
They looked designed. The glass, the metal, the curved roof, even the way the phones were arranged inside made the whole thing feel almost space-age. Sitting there among all that old architecture and history, it stood out even more. It looked less like a public telephone and more like a small piece of modern art.
I remember thinking even then that public phones were probably on their way out. Cell phones were already taking over, and booths like this were becoming part of another era. That made me want to photograph them while they were still there.
Sometimes you photograph something because it’s beautiful. Sometimes you photograph it because you can already tell it won’t be there forever.
