The Door That Wasn’t There

I took the original photo while walking across a bridge I use often. What caught my eye was the metal grate beneath my feet—the repeating openings, the texture, and the way the whole thing looked almost architectural. Once I started looking at it differently, those openings became rooms, balconies, ladders, little gardens, and an entire hidden civilization built inside the structure. The strange part is that it feels both ancient and futuristic at the same time. Then there’s the blue doorway, glowing in the middle of it all, with one figure standing in front of it. That became the mystery of the picture: in a place where everything seems to belong, one door appears that was never supposed to be there.

Who’s Pushing It?

I took the original picture on one of my walks. It was just an old rusty utility hatch in the ground, the kind of thing most people would step over without giving it another thought.

But when I looked at it later, I didn’t see a hatch anymore. I saw a vault. Then I started thinking about what might be happening around it. Before long there were wires, explosives, gauges, a giant red button, and a whole crew of little burglars who had obviously spent a lot of time planning the job.

They brought the charges. They brought the tools. They even brought the money bags.

There was only one problem.

Somebody still had to push the button.

That became the whole story for me. Everybody looks brave when the plan is still on paper. Everybody is excited when they are wiring things up and talking about what is going to happen next. But eventually there comes a moment when somebody has to actually do the thing everyone else was so eager to suggest.

And judging by the looks on their faces, nobody volunteered.
