The Troll
This guy has an interesting story behind him.
This is actually part of a tree that fell last winter here in Dallas. It was a huge tree — you can tell by the size of that trunk. The city spent about a week trying to get it all cut up and hauled out from under this bridge.
But this one piece down here just positioned itself so they couldn’t get chains in to pull it out. They tried and tried, and finally just left it there for now. I don’t know if they plan on coming back for it.
I was walking by it one day and thought, well, that would be interesting to take a picture of. The next day I came back and was looking at it again while I was taking the picture, and it hit me — oh, that could be a troll. Like in a children’s story, living underneath a bridge.
And that’s how he came to be.

The wave hitting the rock at Pacific Grove.
I used to run this stretch all the time when I was living in the Bay Area, down in Monterey. Pacific Grove is not too far, and I liked to run along the ocean.
I’d go in the early morning or in the evening to miss the crowds — summertime it gets busy out there. But running from Lover’s Point up toward the golf course, that wasn’t too bad. It was always a challenge, and it could be pretty windy depending on the time of day.
There’s a lot of ice plant along there, and it’s just beautiful. This wave was really crashing down right across from the golf course at Pebble Beach.
I used to run about six miles from my apartment in Pacific Grove and back — twelve miles round trip. On a nice day, that was a great run.
